Introduction


CivilEdge is approved by SafeWork NSW to deliver Traffic Control Work Training (TCWT) and this short course addresses the skills and knowledge for those responsible for stopping and starting traffic in temporary traffic management using a stop slow bat or boom gate.

This course does not qualify a participant to set up or implement traffic management plans.

Target Audience

Course requirements:

Learners are required to:
  • Be 18 years of age or over
  • Have Language‚ Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills to ACSF level 2 or above
  • Bring your own PPE (including steel capped boots, long pants and high visibility shirt / vest / jacket).
  • Provide 100 points Evidence of Identity (EOI) - you are required to bring original ID documents on the training day (click here to see EOI requirements in your State).
    • You'll not be allowed to participate in the training if you do not bring the IDs.

To reduce our environmental impact, we are digitizing our training material. Please ensure that you bring your smart-phone / tablet / laptop as you'll be required to scan a QR code to download the Learner Guide of this course.

If you are keen to work as a Traffic Controller in NSW it is also highly recommended that you have a White Card and hold a provisional or open drivers licence as you will be required to travel to work sites and may be required to drive work vehicles.

Learning Outcomes

  • Stop/direct road users using a stop/slow bat and understand stopping sight distances
  • Maintain traffic incident reports
  • Understand the Traffic Guidance Schemes (TGSs) also known as Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) for the site
  • Assess and respond to changes in the environment, for example traffic volumes, weather conditions, road conditions, Work Health and Safety (WHS) and operational requirements
  • Carry out risk assessments for personal safety
  • Participate in toolbox talks (specific to traffic control)
  • Use communication methods and devices
  • Conform to traffic control policy and procedures

Learning Methods

This course is delivered over 2 days and include the following:
  • Classroom activities
  • Theory questionnaires and group activities
  • Minimum practical traffic control simulation full scale devices and vehicles in controlled and safe environments
The final practical assessment is conducted on a second scheduled day and all units of competency are assessed on the job via on a minimum of 2 (two) separate occasions (in the context of traffic control at worksites). Assessment include:
  • Theory questionnaires and activities
  • On the job practical application and observation
  • Provision of workplace samples and documentation

  • RIICOM201E Communicate in the workplace
  • RIIWHS201E Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures
  • RIIWHS206 Control traffic with portable traffic control devices and temporary traffic signs
Successful students will receive a Statement of Completion on the day of training.
A Statement of Attainment and SafeWork NSW Card will be processed and issued upon successful final assessment.
