Introduction

This skill sets address the skills and knowledge required for those responsible for traffic control and traffic management implementation on Temporary Traffic Management Category 2 environments as described in the Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management.

Target Audience

These skill sets are for individuals seeking approval through their State/Territory Transport Agency who will be responsible for stopping and starting traffic in Temporary Traffic Management (TTM) on high volume roads and for traffic management implementation on Temporary Traffic Management Category 2 environments as described in the Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management.

Course Requirements:
  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Have Language‚ Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills to ACSF level 2 or above (not required if previously completed with CivilEdge)
  • Completion of 'RIISS00058 Traffic Controller Skill Set for Urban Streets and Low Volume Rural Roads' (TC1 Skill Set)
  • Completion of the 'RIISS00060 Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set for Urban Streets and Low Volume Rural Roads' (TMI 1 Skill Set)
  • At least 40 hours of experience working in a temporary traffic management workplace in a traffic controller role.
  • At least one month experience applying skills and knowledge relevant to the TMI 1 skill set in a temporary traffic management workplace
  • Provide evidence of relevant experience setting up at least 12 temporary traffic management types including high speed roads or high-volume roads, and at least two of the following types:
    • pedestrian and cyclist controls
    • construction sites
    • lane closures
    • shoulder closures
    • night works
    • use of portable traffic control devices
    • motorways or freeways
  • Bring your own PPE (including steel capped boots‚ broad brimmed hat, eye protection, gloves, long pants and high visibility shirt / vest / jacket).

CITB Funding Information

Learners may be eligible for CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) funding to support training of eligible workers in the construction industry. CITB funding is only available for South Australian resident learners and is provided upon provision of a valid CITB identification number upon booking.
 

CITB funding for this course is $360 - reducing the course fee from $900 to $540!


If you are unable to provide a valid CITB number or if you do not successfully complete the course you will be required to pay the full course price. For more information on CITB funding criteria and conditions please go to www.citb.org.au.

We acknowledge the support of the Construction Industry Training Board in reducing the cost of training for eligible workers.

Learning Outcomes

  • Prepare to control traffic and operate communication devices
  • Control traffic at traffic signals where signals have been turned off
  • Control traffic on high volume roads
  • Prepare to implement traffic management plan
  • Set out & monitor traffic guidance scheme
  • Conduct housekeeping activities & close down work activities
  • Ensure the work health and safety requirements are adhered to by all
  • Communicate regularly with client, personnel, and other relevant parties
  • Diagnose and solve routine problems
  • Monitor & coordinate work program
  • Maintain operating records

Learning Methods

The combined Traffic Controller 2 (TC2) and Traffic Management Implementer 2 (TMI 2) course will run over 2 days. Each day is focussed on the learning content and the assessment of the theory aspects of the units.

Post course (TC2) - Learners are required to complete 20 hours of practical training experience (work-placement) within 6 months following the formal instructional sessions of the course.
During work-placement‚ learners will be required to keep a logbook (provided) of their 20-hours of practical training experience.
The final practical assessment (post completion of the 20 hours) will be conducted in a live traffic scenario under supervision.

NOTE: During work-placement learners will be required to provide their own PPE.

Post course (TMI2) – within a 6-month period of completing the theoretical component of the course, the learner will be required to complete 3 different set-ups based on Traffic Management Plans and Traffic Guidance Schemes relevant to their working conditions.

Successful participants will receive a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainments for:
- RIISS00059 Traffic Controller Skill Set for High Volume Roads and;
- RIISS00061 Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set for High Volume Roads
