Introduction

Implement Traffic Control PlansCivilEdge is approved by SafeWork NSW to deliver Traffic Control Work Training (TCWT) and this course addresses the skills and knowledge for personnel responsible for traffic management on a site to implement a work zone traffic management plan in the immediate vicinity of a workplace.

This course does not qualify a participant to control traffic with a stop-slow bat or boom gate, or to modify existing traffic control plans.

Target Audience

Course requirements:

Learners are required to:
  • Be 18 years of age or over
  • Have Language‚ Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills to ACSF level 2 or above
  • Bring your own PPE (including steel capped boots, long pants and high visibility shirt / vest / jacket).
  • Provide 100 points Evidence of Identity (EOI) - you are required to bring original ID documents on the training day (click here to see EOI requirements in your State).
    • You'll not be allowed to participate in the training if you do not bring the IDs.

To reduce our environmental impact, we are digitizing our training material. Please ensure that you bring your smart-phone / tablet / laptop as you'll be required to scan a QR code to download the Learner Guide of this course.

If you are keen to work as a Traffic Controller in NSW it is also highly recommended that you have a White Card and hold a provisional or open drivers licence as you will be required to travel to work sites and may be required to drive work vehicles.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify safety implications of traffic control at road works and personal responsibilities
  • Set up, monitor and close down traffic control devices according to a nominated TGS/TMP, to WHS and legislative requirements
  • Operate a two-way radio correctly and effectively
  • Check, clean and store equipment on completion of work and close down a TGS/TMP
  • Select a TCP to suit site conditions, traffic volumes and work activities, and adjust to suit the specific road environment
  • Know the basic function of the TGS/TMP system
  • Adapt to all work health and safety (WHS) and operational requirements
  • Use the site/location assessment, distinguish topographical landmarks and carry out authorised risk control
  • Conduct an onsite check of a TGS/TMP to identify any unexpected risks/hazards
  • Plan for emergencies that may arise
  • Ensure spacing between signs and traffic control devices is in line with a TGS/TMP
  • Understand speed, environment, type and class of vehicles, traffic density, sight lines, environmental conditions, weather patterns and surface type
  • Maintain traffic incident reports
  • Monitor traffic controllers

Learning Methods

This course is delivered over 2 days and include the following:
  • Classroom activities
  • Theory questionnaires and group activities
  • Minimum practical implementation using full scale devices and vehicles in controlled and safe environments
The final practical assessment is conducted on a second scheduled day and all units of competency are assessed on the job via 3 (three) separate live projects, this includes:
  • Theory questionnaires and activities
  • On the job practical application and observation
  • Provision of workplace samples and documentation

Successful students will receive a Statement of Completion on the day of training.
A Statement of Attainment and SafeWork NSW Card will be processed and issued upon successful final assessment.
