Introduction

This short course will provide the knowledge and skills to control traffic with a stop-slow bat, to work safely and follow work health and safety policies and procedures and to effectively communicate in an operational role in traffic control.

This course consists of two parts (classroom and workplace) and learners must successfully complete both to be deemed competent. 

This course is an approved traffic controller training program in Queensland and will provide the knowledge and skills necessary to safely control traffic with a stop-slow bat. 

Target Audience

This course is aimed at learners who want to obtain a licence to work as a Traffic Controller in Queensland or perform traffic control duties. To become an Accredited Traffic Controller in Queensland you are required to successfully complete an approved traffic controller training and entrants must meet the requirements as set out in the Traffic Controller Accreditation Scheme - Approved Procedures (TCASAP).

Course requirements 

Learners are required to:
  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • Have Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills to an ACSF level 2 or above
  • Hold a white card / blue card which must be obtained prior to the course (CPCWHS1001 or equivalent). 
  • Have held within the last five (5) years, a driver licence other than a learner license.
  • Bring your own PPE (including eye protection, hearing protection, hard hat, steel capped boots, long pants and high visibility shirt / vest / jacket)

Learners who apply to the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) for a Traffic Controller Accreditation after successful completion of the course will be subject to a criminal history check.

PLEASE NOTE: It is a learner's responsibility to check their driver's licence status, medical fitness suitability and criminal history with TMR if they have any concerns as refund of the course fee will not be issued if TMR rejects the application.

Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) Funding

CSQ provides funding to reduce the financial obstacle to training, making upskilling an affordable option for many more individuals in the construction industry.


For eligible participants, CSQ funding will cover $401 of the course cost, meaning you only have to pay $119.

This funding is provided for the unit: RIIWHS205E Control traffic with stop-slow bat.

Learning Methods

This course consists of two parts and learners must successfully complete both to be deemed competent:
  • Part 1 - Classroom Training (1 day) which involves a variety of learning methods, presentations, group activities, demonstrations and subsequent simulated and practical activities to provide learners with the opportunity practice their new skills and prepare them for their vocational placement.
 
  • Part 2 - Vocational Placement (20 hours) is on the job placement at a roadwork site where learners are provided the opportunity to experience a range of practical activities, including a significant period of stop-slow traffic control activity under close supervision. Your placement will be provided by a traffic management organisation near your training venue. Please contact us if you reside away from the training venue to see if we can assist in allocating your placement as close to your residence as possible. Please note this is not always possible. Vocational Placement is required to be completed within 3-months of training. 

During vocational placement learners will be required to keep a logbook of their 20-hours placement during which time they are able to embed their learning and final assessment will be conducted by CivilEdge on-site.

NOTE: During vocational placement learners will be required to provide their own PPE.
